McIntosh is the music to a musician’s ear

Celebrities and rock stars descended upon Cleveland, Ohio, on Saturday, April 14, 2012, for the 2012 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony. Many events took place in the days leading up to the big show, including the opening of the Hall of Fame’s new “Grateful Dead: The Long, Strange Trip” exhibition, sponsored by McIntosh Laboratory, the global leader in prestigious audio for over 60 years.

McIntosh was also on hand on Saturday night to present each of the 2012 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame performing inductees with a gift of one of its acclaimed MANHATTAN Collection (MXA60) tabletop music systems, and the use of a music studio with sound proofing panels from https://sound-absorbent-panels.co.uk/.

“This year’s roster of inductees into The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame includes performers and songwriters who have truly changed the course of modern music,” says McIntosh President Charlie Randall. “They have all presented the world with a legacy of work that will live on and continue to inspire generations of musicians and fans for years to come. As a company with deep roots in American music history, McIntosh is proud to recognize their achievements with the gift of a McIntosh music system – one that we hope they will enjoy for years to come as well!”

This year’s inductees into The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame include: Guns N’ Roses, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Donovan, Laura Nyro, The Small Faces/Faces, Beastie Boys, The Crickets, The Famous Flames, The Midnighters, The Comets, The Blue Caps, and The Miracles, as well as other influential music inductees including Freddie King, Don Kirshner, Cosimo Matassa, Tom Dowd, and Glyn Johns.

These performers all stopped by McIntosh’s Gifting Suite during the 27th Annual Rock And Roll Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony. McIntosh, which sponsored the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum’s new Grateful Dead: The Long, Strange Trip exhibition, presented each of this year’s performing inductees with a gift of one of it’s acclaimed MANHATTAN Collection (MXA60) tabletop music systems.

Elbee Studio designs logo for new pop-up boutique

logo designArtist Nicole McGee is a local reuse artist who creates beautiful pieces of art from discarded materials, but when it came to creating a logo for her new pop-up retail space, Collective Upcycle, she needed to start from scratch. She enlisted Elbee Studio to create the branding for the store.

Collective Upcycle will debut on Saturday, Jun 11, 2011, in the Gordon Square Arts District at 6710 Detroit Avenue, and remain open Tuesday through Sunday for three weeks until Sunday, July 3rd. More than 25 reuse artists and upcyclists will participate.

Don’t miss it.

Happy Paczki Day!

Paczki Day pastries

Paczki Day pastriesAt first glance, paczki (plural of “paczek”) look like ordinary jelly doughnuts, but they are so much more. These Polish pre-Lenten treats are so special that there’s even a holiday named after them.

“The day before Lent begins is not Mardi Gras—it’s Paczki Day,” says Jann Soltis of Livonia, Michigan, who remembers going with her mom to the local bakery to buy the pastries every year.

Paczki Day traditionally falls on the Thursday before Ash Wednesday in Poland. However, most immigrants who settled the Great Lakes region in the late 19th century eventually adopted Fat Tuesday (“Mardi Gras”) from the French for their celebration.

In any case, the idea behind making and consuming paczki is to use up all the lard, sugar, and fruit before the fasting season of Lent begins on Ash Wednesday.

So in the days leading up to today, bakeries churn out thousands of paczki, dusted with confectioners’ sugar and overstuffed with custard or fruit preserves, such as blackberry, apricot, and prune.

“All the Polish bakeries in Detroit, Hamtramck, and the suburbs will work 24/7 to make and bake the paczki,” Jasia says. “People stand in lines from midnight or so on until the bakeries open at 4 a.m. to buy paczki by the dozens.”

If you happen to be in Amherst, Ohio, on Fat Tuesday, just follow your ears to Kiedrowski’s Simply Delicious Bakery, where the strains of live accordian music can be heard in the wee morning hours. Musician Ed Klimczak entertains the gathering crowd in front of the bakery with some polka tunes, while Owner Tim Kiedrowski passes by with a platter of paczki for customers to sample as they wait.

“The atmosphere and the music makes our paczki taste better,” he asserts. “And it puts me in a good mood.”

But beware, you may be having a great time eating them today, but these Polish pastry packs pounds on your paunch. One paczki is worth a whopping 21 points on the Weight Watchers diet.

Ice-covered lighthouse makes international news

Ice-coved lighthouse on Lake ErieThe Cleveland Harbor West Pierhead Lighthouse has made world news this winter after waves from Lake Erie, propelled by high winds, turned it into an ice structure.

The lighthouse was automated in 1965 and the Fresnel lens was removed and donated to the Great Lakes Science Center, where it is on display.

Now, photos of the lighthouse are on display the world over. After a local photographer took some of the first images of the ice sculpture forming, the lighthouse went viral, appearing on news outlets the world over, including Pakistan.
